It is a specified sheet product rather than a general-purpose floor, and it only performs the way it is meant to when the seams and the wall junction are done properly.
Safety flooring is sheet vinyl manufactured with aggregate carried through the thickness of the wear layer, rather than a texture pressed into the surface. The slip-resistant character therefore wears down with the sheet instead of polishing away in the first year.
It comes in grades. Some sheets are aimed at areas that are wet underfoot in shoes, some at barefoot areas such as change rooms and pool surrounds, and some at heavy-duty industrial and food areas. They are not interchangeable, and the correct grade for a room comes from the specification or from the operator's understanding of how that room gets used.
Installed properly it is a sealed system: sheets welded together, edges turned up the wall, terminations detailed at drains and doorways. That is what makes it washable in a way a tiled floor with grout joints is not.
Welding is the first. Seams are grooved and heat welded with a matching rod so the sheets fuse into one surface. In a wet room an unwelded seam is simply a path for water to get underneath, and once water is under sheet vinyl the adhesive bond starts to go.
Coving is the second. The sheet turns up the wall over a cove former and terminates in a capping strip or a sealed edge, so there is no open crack at the base for water and dirt to sit in. It also means a room can be hosed or scrubbed without wetting the wall junction. Not every room needs it, but wet and clinical areas nearly always specify it, and it has to be priced with the floor rather than added afterwards.
Substrate is the third and least visible. Sheet vinyl telegraphs, so ridges, hollows, old adhesive and patched trenches all read through the finished surface. Preparation and levelling are a normal part of the scope, and where floors are hosed the falls to drains have to be right before the sheet goes anywhere near them.
Slip resistance is a published product specification. The manufacturer tests the sheet under a defined method and publishes a result. That result belongs to the product, in the condition it was tested, not to your finished room. Our role is to install the specified product in the way the manufacturer requires and to hand you the data sheets for it. We do not test finished floors and we do not certify slip performance.
The other half is upkeep, which in Calgary is seasonal. From roughly November through April, entries take meltwater and grit together, because the City spreads pickle at 3 per cent salt and 97 per cent fine gravel once road surfaces drop below -5C. Grit dulls a textured floor in the walked lane and sits on the surface where it reduces the contact the floor was designed to give. Long matting runs, the cleaning routine the manufacturer specifies and the right chemicals do more for real-world safety than any upgrade in sheet grade.
No. Slip resistance is a published property of the sheet you specify, measured by the manufacturer under a defined test method. We install that product to its specification, provide the data sheet, and it is the product plus your cleaning and matting regime that determine real conditions underfoot.

Only where the existing surface is sound, flat, bonded and compatible. In practice most safety flooring goes over a properly prepared and levelled substrate, because sheet vinyl shows every ridge, hollow and old adhesive line beneath it.
Entrances are the hardest test here, because grit and meltwater arrive together all winter. Safety sheet copes well with the wet, but the grit is abrasive and will dull a textured surface in the walked lane, so a long matting run in front of it does more good than any upgrade to the sheet itself.
