Backsplash Installation Calgary for Kitchens and Bars

A backsplash is a small area with a very high detail count. Outlets, cabinet ends, the range gap and the countertop joint all land within a few square feet, and every one of them is visible from the kitchen table.

What can we help with?

So the right crew reviews your project.

We tile. Moving or extending an electrical box is work for a licensed electrician and is arranged separately.

Our Process

How a Calgary backsplash installation gets built

1

Check the wall

Measure for flat and plumb, and check whether the countertop is level and the upper cabinets are parallel to it. Very few kitchens are all three.

2

Set the layout

Decide the starting line and the centring so cuts land where they read best, usually balanced at the range and at open end walls.

3

Set and cut

Work the field, then cut around outlets, switches, window returns and cabinet ends so the pattern stays continuous through them.

4

Grout and joint

Grout the field, then use flexible sealant at the countertop joint and the internal corners rather than grouting them solid.

Three backsplash details that decide the finished look

Outlets and switches

Boxes rarely align with a tile grid. The cuts around them are planned into the layout, and where a box needs to be extended or reset to sit proud of the new tile, a licensed electrician does that part.

Where the tile stops

An open end wall needs a decision: a metal profile, a bullnose edge, a mitre, or returning the tile around the corner. Left to the last minute it usually ends up as caulk.

The countertop joint

Counter and wall move independently, so that line takes a flexible sealant. Grouting it solid is the standard reason a backsplash develops a cracked line along the bottom.

Backsplash installation cost in Calgary: planning ranges

Canadian dollars, for early budgeting only. A backsplash is a small area with a very high detail count, so per-square-foot figures alone rarely reflect a short, intricate run.

Removing an existing backsplash

$1 to $3 per sq ft

Site-wide planning range for removal. Old tile pulled off drywall usually takes some of the wall face with it, so patching is assessed once it is off.

Ask about removal

Flooring Experts Calgary installs kitchen and bar backsplashes across Calgary, from the wall check through to the edge profile where the tile stops.

Backsplash installation is vertical tile, not floor tile

On a floor, gravity helps and the eye reads the whole plane at once. On a backsplash, the tile has to stay where it is put while it sets, and the finished surface sits at eye level about a metre from where people stand.

That changes what matters. Flatness of the wall becomes critical, because any hollow or bulge shows as a shadow line along the tile edges. Plumb matters too: if the wall leans, a stacked pattern will visibly diverge from the cabinet edge over a run of a few metres.

Calgary's older stock is where this bites. Pre-1960 inner-city homes and much of the 1960s to 1980s bungalow ring have walls that are neither flat nor plumb, and countertops that are not quite level with cabinets that are not quite parallel. We measure all three before choosing a format, because a large rectangular tile will report every one of those discrepancies and a smaller mosaic will quietly absorb them.

Backsplash layout around outlets, cabinets and the range

The layout is the job. Most of the actual value in a backsplash is decided before any adhesive is mixed.

Outlets and switches are the constraint that drives everything. Their boxes were positioned for wiring convenience, not for a tile grid, so the starting line and the centring get chosen so cuts around them look deliberate. Where a box sits too deep for the new surface, it needs extending or resetting, and that is a licensed electrician's work rather than ours.

The range wall usually becomes the focal point, particularly where there is a hood and a full-height run behind it. Centring there and letting the cuts fall at the ends generally reads better than centring the room and cutting awkwardly behind the cooker.

Cabinet ends, window returns and the gap under a hood all get resolved in the same pass. So does the question of continuity: whether a pattern runs straight through behind the range or restarts, and whether a feature area is framed or blended.

Backsplash edges, end walls and the countertop joint

Two details separate a tidy backsplash from an untidy one, and neither is the tile itself.

The first is where the run stops. A wall that ends in open air needs an actual edge treatment, whether that is a metal profile, a bullnose piece, a mitred corner or returning the tile around onto the adjacent face. Deciding this late is how a job ends up with a bead of caulk down the exposed edge, and it is visible from the whole room.

The second is the joint where tile meets countertop. The counter and the wall move independently, so that line takes a flexible sealant rather than grout. The same applies to internal corners. Grouting those solid is the single most common reason a backsplash develops a fine cracked line along the bottom within the first year, and it is entirely avoidable.

A contrasting grout colour turns a plain tile into a visible grid pattern; a matched colour makes the same tile read as one continuous surface. Look at both against the actual cabinets and counter before deciding, not against a colour chart under different lighting.

Backsplash installation questions from Calgary kitchens

Can a new backsplash go over the old tile?

It is possible in some cases but it is usually the wrong call. Tiling over adds thickness that pushes the surface past the outlet boxes and the cabinet ends, and it hides whatever condition the wall underneath is in.

How high should the backsplash go?

To the underside of the upper cabinets is the common choice, with a full run to the hood or ceiling behind the range. On a wall with no uppers, the stopping line becomes a design decision and it is worth agreeing before the tile arrives.

Do you handle the electrical work?

No. We tile. If a receptacle box has to be extended or relocated so it sits correctly against the new surface, that is a licensed electrician's work and we coordinate around it.

My kitchen walls are not flat. Is that a problem?

It depends how far out they are. Older Calgary inner-city homes often have walls that are neither flat nor plumb, and large tiles show that immediately. We measure first and tell you whether the wall needs correcting or whether a smaller format will absorb it.

Does the grout colour matter that much?

More than the tile in some layouts. A contrasting grout turns a plain tile into a visible grid, and a matched grout makes the same tile read as a single surface. It is worth deciding with a sample on the wall, not from a chart.

How long is the kitchen out of use?

Backsplash runs are short jobs, but they involve dust from cutting and a period where the counter is not usable. We agree the working sequence and protection for the counter and appliances before starting.
