Lifting a damaged board out of a nailed solid floor is routine work. The board is cut along its length, the tongue side is released, the fasteners come out, and a replacement is cut to fit with the lower lip of its groove trimmed so it can drop in rather than slide. Glued-down floors and floating floors behave differently, and a click-together engineered floor sometimes has to be worked back from the nearest wall instead.
The hard part is never the carpentry. It is the match. Calgary's 1960s to 1980s bungalow ring is full of original oak strip, and matching it today means finding the same species, the same width, the same thickness and a compatible tongue profile. Pre-1960 inner-city floors can be narrower again. Even when everything lines up on paper, a new board arrives with none of the oxidation and sun exposure the rest of the floor has accumulated over fifty years.
That leaves three finishing routes, chosen before the board comes out rather than after it. Spot finishing blends the repair as far as it can and leaves it detectable up close. A room-wide recoat evens out sheen but not colour. A full sand takes the whole floor back to bare wood and makes the repair genuinely disappear.
A squeak is almost never a fault in the board making the noise. It is a fastener moving in the subfloor, two panels rubbing at a seam, a joist that has dried and pulled away from the sheathing, or a nail that has worked loose through years of deflection.
Where there is access from below, the fix comes from that side and the finished floor is never opened. Blocking, shims bedded in adhesive and screws driven up into the underside of the subfloor deal with most of it. Where there is no access, the repair has to come through the face of the floor: screws driven down into the subfloor, countersunk and filled. Those plugs stay visible at close range, so they are named in the quote before the work starts.
Movement across a wider area is a different conversation entirely. If a section of floor deflects underfoot, the question is the subfloor or the framing beneath it. A new board laid over that fixes nothing.
Calgary sits in the chinook belt. Through the heating season, indoor relative humidity routinely drops below 30%, under Health Canada's winter guidance of roughly 30 to 35%, and well under the 35 to 55% band the National Wood Flooring Association associates with dimensional stability. Wood responds by shrinking. Gaps open along board edges, they are at their widest in the depth of winter, and wide-plank floors show it most because every board loses proportionally more width. By July most of it has closed again.
That cycle is why we resist filling gaps in February. Filler placed at the widest point gets crushed or pushed out when the boards take moisture back in spring, and then you have two problems. The durable answer is on the humidity side rather than the wood side.
Cupping runs the opposite way. Boards standing higher at the edges than in the centre mean moisture arriving from underneath, and that is a plumbing or slab question before it is a flooring one.

Yes, though the method differs. Engineered boards have a limited real-wood wear layer, so a damaged board is more often replaced than sanded. On a click-together floating floor the usual approach is to work in from the nearest wall, though a single board can sometimes be cut out and glued back if the product allows it.
Cupping means the underside of the board is wetter than the top, so the first question is where that moisture comes from. Appliance supply lines, a slow drain leak and an unsealed concrete slab are the usual candidates. Replacing the boards before the source is dealt with just resets the clock on the same damage.
