AC rating for the actual room
A hallway off a Calgary front door and a spare bedroom do not need the same surface. Ask what abrasion class the board carries and match it to where it is going, not to the display stand.
Underlay and moisture
Some laminate ships with underlay attached and some does not. Over concrete, a vapour retarder is usually part of the assembly. Doubling up an attached pad with a second layer is a common and avoidable mistake.
Expansion space
A floating floor has to be able to move. Perimeter gaps, breaks at long runs and doorway transitions are what keep the joints from peaking. They are covered by trim, not eliminated.

Some laminate floors look tired in three years and others look fine in ten, and the difference is usually grit rather than product quality. When Calgary road surfaces fall below -5C the City switches to pickle, roughly 3% salt and 97% fine gravel. That gravel rides indoors on boots for the whole winter, and fine gravel underfoot is sandpaper.
That is why the abrasion class printed on the box matters here. An entry, a mudroom and the traffic lane between the front door and the kitchen take a different beating than a bedroom does. Deep walk-off matting inside the door keeps most of that gravel off the surface in the first place.
Subfloor flatness under laminate flooring
Laminate floats. It is not fastened to what it sits on, so it bridges anything the substrate does wrong. A dip under a joint puts the locking system into a hinge, and a hinge that flexes every time someone walks over it eventually fails. Nothing about the plank causes that. The subfloor does.
So the first thing we do on a laminate quote is put a long straightedge across the floor and find out where it sits. Sometimes the answer is that nothing is needed. Sometimes a section of self-levelling compound is the difference between a floor that stays silent and a floor that clicks. Either way you should know before the material is on site, not while it is being laid.
Height comes with it. New plank plus underlay has to meet the stairs, the door jambs, the vents and the appliance kicks. Where laminate goes over an existing floor rather than replacing it, that stack grows and the transitions have to be planned rather than improvised.
Laminate flooring expansion gaps through a Calgary winter
Laminate is a printed wear surface over a dense fibreboard core, so it does not shrink and swell the way solid wood does through Calgary's dry heating season. It is not inert either. The core still responds to moisture, and the assembly still has to move as a sheet.
That is what the perimeter expansion gap is for, and it is the detail most often lost. Trim covers it. Baseboard hides it. A floor pinched under a kitchen island, a heavy bookcase or a doorway with no break has nowhere to go, and in a dry winter followed by a humid spring the joints tell you about it.
Long runs get a break for the same reason, and doorways between rooms get a transition rather than a continuous sheet of plank running through the whole floor. Most manufacturers publish a maximum continuous run in each direction before a break is required, and that figure comes off the product instructions rather than off a rule of thumb.

Do I really need an expansion gap?
Yes. A laminate floor floats, and it has to be free to move at the perimeter and at long runs. Pinch it under a cabinet, a heavy island or a doorway with no break and the joints will eventually peak or separate. The gap is hidden by baseboard and trim, not removed.
Can laminate be installed over my existing tile or vinyl?
Sometimes. The existing surface has to be well bonded, sound and flat enough for a floating floor, and the added height has to work at doors, stairs and appliances. If the old floor is loose, hollow or badly out of flat, taking it up is usually cheaper than fighting it.
Do you supply the laminate or can I buy my own?
Either works. Plenty of people arrive having already bought their product, in which case we install to the manufacturer instructions that came with it. If you have not chosen yet, we will work through the rating, thickness and underlay requirements with you before anything is ordered.
