Safety flooring is priced from the measured rooms, set by the sheet specified, coving per linear foot and welded seams, with levelling at $2-$6 per sq ft. Safety flooring is a specified product with published slip-resistance data, installed as a sealed sheet system. The performance comes from the sheet you choose and the way the seams and edges are finished.

Send the rooms involved, whether they are washed down or hosed, any floor drains, and the product or specification you are working to.
Slip-resistance ratings are published product specifications tested by the manufacturer. We install to that specification and do not certify slip performance ourselves.
Where safety flooring is installed in Calgary buildings
Wet and washdown rooms
Change rooms, showers, washrooms, pool surrounds, janitorial rooms and commercial laundries. These are the areas where seams, drainage falls and the junction at the wall matter most.
Clinical and care areas
Treatment rooms, dental and veterinary suites, care facilities and lab spaces, where a sealed, coved, easily disinfected floor with no open joints is normally part of the specification.
Entries, corridors and back of house
The wet-in-winter zone just inside a commercial door, plus service corridors and prep areas that are mopped daily and take rolling loads.
Entries, corridors and back of house
Where slip risk concentrates
Service corridors, prep areas and the wet zone just inside a commercial door are mopped daily and take rolling loads, so that is where the specified slip-resistant floor, clear hazard marking and a long matting run are planned together.
What a safety flooring specification needs to settle
The sheet is one line of the scope. These are the rest of it.
Product and published rating
Which sheet, in which grade, with which published slip-resistance data. This is set by the specification or by you, and we install to it.
Substrate and moisture
Sheet vinyl needs a smooth, sound, dry base. The product states its own moisture limit for the slab, and levelling is normally required to get a fair finish.
Coving method
Whether the sheet turns up the wall over a cove former and terminates in a capping strip or seal, and the finished cove height in each room.
Seam treatment
Which seams are heat welded with a matching welding rod, and how the floor terminates at drains, thresholds and adjoining finishes.
Cleaning regime
The chemicals and machines the operator uses, since textured safety sheet is cleaned differently from a smooth vinyl and the wrong routine dulls it quickly.
Documents we need
Send us the submittal and site-access list your building or consultant requires and we will respond to it directly.
Our Process
How safety flooring is installed, coved and welded
1
Confirm the rooms and the wet zones
Identify which areas are hosed, which are mopped, where drains sit and where the sheet has to turn up the wall.
2
Prepare the substrate
Remove the existing finish and residues, deal with moisture requirements and level to the smoothness the sheet needs.
3
Fit, cove and weld
Set out the sheet to minimise seams in wet areas, form the coves, then heat weld the seams with matching rod.
4
Hand over the data
Provide the product data sheets and the manufacturer's cleaning and maintenance guidance for the installed system.
Safety flooring is a specified sheet product rather than a general-purpose floor, and it only performs the way it is meant to when the seams and the wall junction are done properly.
What safety flooring is: slip-resistant sheet vinyl grades
Safety flooring is sheet vinyl manufactured with aggregate carried through the thickness of the wear layer, rather than a texture pressed into the surface. The slip-resistant character therefore wears down with the sheet instead of polishing away in the first year.
It comes in grades. Some sheets are aimed at areas that are wet underfoot in shoes, some at barefoot areas such as change rooms and pool surrounds, and some at heavy-duty industrial and food areas. They are not interchangeable, and the correct grade for a room comes from the specification or from the operator's understanding of how that room gets used.
Installed properly it is a sealed system: sheets welded together, edges turned up the wall, terminations detailed at drains and doorways. That is what makes it washable in a way a tiled floor with grout joints is not.
Safety flooring welded seams, coving and substrate preparation
Welding is the first. Seams are grooved and heat welded with a matching rod so the sheets fuse into one surface. In a wet room an unwelded seam is simply a path for water to get underneath, and once water is under sheet vinyl the adhesive bond starts to go.
Coving is the second. The sheet turns up the wall over a cove former and terminates in a capping strip or a sealed edge, so there is no open crack at the base for water and dirt to sit in. It also means a room can be hosed or scrubbed without wetting the wall junction. Not every room needs it, but wet and clinical areas nearly always specify it, and it has to be priced with the floor rather than added afterwards.
Substrate is the third and least visible. Sheet vinyl telegraphs, so ridges, hollows, old adhesive and patched trenches all read through the finished surface. Preparation and levelling are a normal part of the scope, and where floors are hosed the falls to drains have to be right before the sheet goes anywhere near them.
Safety flooring slip resistance ratings and Calgary winter upkeep
Slip resistance is a published product specification. The manufacturer tests the sheet under a defined method and publishes a result. That result belongs to the product, in the condition it was tested, not to your finished room. Our role is to install the specified product in the way the manufacturer requires and to hand you the data sheets for it. We do not test finished floors and we do not certify slip performance.
The other half is upkeep, which in Calgary is seasonal. From roughly November through April, entries take meltwater and grit together, because the City spreads pickle at 3 per cent salt and 97 per cent fine gravel once road surfaces drop below -15C. Grit dulls a textured floor in the walked lane and sits on the surface where it reduces the contact the floor was designed to give. Long matting runs, the cleaning routine the manufacturer specifies and the right chemicals do more for real-world safety than any upgrade in sheet grade.
Safety flooring questions in Calgary
Can you tell us the floor will not be slippery?
No. Slip resistance is a published property of the sheet you specify, measured by the manufacturer under a defined test method. We install that product to its specification, provide the data sheet, and it is the product plus your cleaning and matting regime that determine real conditions underfoot.
Why do the seams have to be welded?
A heat-welded seam fuses the sheets with a matching rod so there is no open joint for water to travel into. In a washdown or clinical area an unwelded seam is a route under the floor, and once water is under sheet vinyl the adhesive bond goes.
What is coving and do we need it?
Coving turns the floor sheet up the wall over a former, so the floor and skirting are one continuous surface with no crack at the base. Wet rooms and clinical areas almost always call for it. A dry corridor often does not.
Can it be laid over the existing floor?
Only where the existing surface is sound, flat, bonded and compatible. In practice most safety flooring goes over a properly prepared and levelled substrate, because sheet vinyl shows every ridge, hollow and old adhesive line beneath it.
How does it handle Calgary winters at an entrance?
Entrances are the hardest test here, because grit and meltwater arrive together all winter. Safety sheet copes well with the wet, but the grit is abrasive and will dull a textured surface in the walked lane, so a long matting run in front of it does more good than any upgrade to the sheet itself.
Does the building code set the slip rating?
The enforceable code in Alberta is the National Building Code 2023 Alberta Edition, in force since May 1, 2024. Specific product performance for a given room normally comes from the project specification, the designer or the operator's own requirements, and we install to what is specified.
