Measured, not eyeballed Self-levelling compound Slab assessment first

Floor Leveling Calgary: flatness, compound and slab heave

A floor is levelled to a tolerance, and that tolerance comes from the covering going over it. We measure the deviation first, work out whether it is a dip, a hump or a moving slab, and then choose between feathering, patching and a poured compound.

What can we help with?

So the right crew reviews your project.

Floor levelling corrects the shape of the surface. It does not restrain a slab that is still moving, and an active heave is assessed before compound is poured.

Why floor levelling targets flatness, not level

Level means the floor is horizontal. Flat means it has no dips or humps across a given span. Floor coverings care overwhelmingly about flatness, and hardly at all about level. An old house can sit visibly out of level and still take a floating floor without complaint, while a perfectly horizontal slab with a shallow bowl in the middle will telegraph that bowl through click flooring within a season. Knowing which of the two you have decides whether you are looking at a skim coat, a poured compound or a structural conversation.

Three floor levelling methods used on Calgary floors

Feathering and skim coating

Thin cementitious material spread to blend local high and low spots, ridged adhesive residue or fastener humps. Best for shallow, isolated deviation over a sound base.

Self-levelling compound

A flowable pour that finds its own plane across a whole room. Needs a primed, contained, prepared substrate and a real depth range. This is the method for broad, unpredictable deviation.

Mechanical correction

Grinding down a high spot, or shimming and sistering framing on a suspended floor. Used when the deviation is too large or too structural for a poured product to solve.

Calgary floor levelling planning ranges

Planning ranges in Canadian dollars, for budgeting only. Depth, area, primer, containment and access all move the real figure.

Removal before levelling

$1-3 per sq ft

Planning range where an existing covering has to come up before the substrate can be prepared. Adhesive residue removal is usually the deciding factor.

Furniture handling

$200-600 flat

Planning range for clearing and returning furniture. A poured floor needs a genuinely empty room, so this is more often required than on a plank installation.

Flooring Experts Calgary carries out floor levelling in Calgary on plywood subfloors and concrete slabs, so the covering going over the top meets the flatness its manufacturer requires.

Floor levelling tolerances and how flat a Calgary subfloor must be

Every floor covering carries a published flatness tolerance from its manufacturer, expressed as a maximum deviation over a stated span. That number is the specification the levelling work has to meet, and it varies a great deal. Large-format tile and long rigid planks are demanding. Carpet over underpad forgives a lot. Sheet vinyl sits somewhere in between but shows every ridge and lump underneath it because the material is thin.

Floor levelling therefore starts with measurement. A straightedge across the room, or a laser and a set of readings, tells you the size and shape of the deviation. That is a different question from whether the floor is horizontal. Plenty of older Calgary houses sit visibly out of level and take a new floor without any trouble at all, because the plane, though tilted, is consistent. A bowl or a ridge is the problem, not a slope.

Floor levelling compound, feathering and patching

Once the deviation is mapped, the method follows from it. Isolated shallow humps, ridged adhesive residue and proud fastener heads are feathering work: a thin cementitious skim spread and blended into the surrounding surface. Broad, irregular deviation across a whole room is where self-levelling compound earns its name, because a flowable pour finds a single plane across an area no amount of hand-troweling would match. Deviation that is too large, or that comes from framing rather than surface, is mechanical: grinding a high spot down, or shimming and correcting the structure below.

Compound has real conditions attached. The substrate has to be clean, sound and primed. The room has to be dammed at doorways and penetrations so the material stays where it is poured. Depth has to fall inside the product's stated range, because these materials do not behave the same at 2 mm as they do at 25 mm. Skipping the primer or pouring over residue produces a level surface bonded to a layer that was already letting go.

Floor levelling over heaved basement slabs in Calgary

In this city the most common reason a floor is badly out of flat is not sloppy framing. It is the slab. Expansive, shrink-swell clay soils are widespread across Alberta including Calgary, and forensic engineering sources note that basement floor slabs are affected by that clay movement to a much greater degree than footings are, which is why heaved and cracked slabs turn up far more often here than genuine foundation damage.

The practical consequence is that a Calgary basement slab has to be understood before it is levelled, not just measured. A dished slab that settled years ago and has been stable since is a straightforward pour. A slab that has lifted along a crack line, or that shows a fresh, sharp displacement, is a different conversation, and the right answer may be to have the movement assessed before any money goes into compound. Pouring a beautifully flat surface over an active heave produces a beautifully flat surface that moves.

Floor levelling cost in Calgary

Floor levelling in Calgary sits in a planning range of roughly $2 to $6 per square foot in Canadian dollars. That is a budgeting band rather than a quote. Pour depth, the area covered, primer, damming at doorways and access to the room all move the real figure within it, and deep pours over contaminated substrates sit at the top of the band. Where an existing covering has to come up before the substrate can be prepared, removal is priced separately in a planning range of roughly $1 to $3 per square foot.

Floor levelling questions in Calgary

How flat does a subfloor actually have to be?

It depends entirely on the covering. Manufacturers publish a flatness tolerance for their product, usually as a maximum deviation over a set span, and large-format tile and long rigid planks are the least forgiving. We work to the tolerance printed for the material you have chosen rather than to a general rule.

Why does my floating floor click and dip in one spot?

A floating floor is unsupported between contact points. Where the substrate falls away, the planks bridge the void and flex under foot, which shows up as movement, hollow sound and stress on the locking joints. The plank is not faulty; the surface below it is not flat.

Can self-levelling compound be poured over anything?

No. It needs a clean, sound, correctly primed and contained substrate, and it needs to be used within its stated depth range. Poured over adhesive residue, dust or a loose surface it will bond to something that is already failing.

Does levelling fix a slab that keeps moving?

No. Levelling corrects the shape of the surface at a point in time. If the slab itself is still moving, the new surface will follow it. That has to be assessed before spending money on compound.

Can you level just the room I am renovating?

Yes, and it is common. The complication is the transition at the doorway, because raising one room changes the height relationship at every threshold. We plan that edge before pouring rather than solving it with a taller transition strip afterwards.

How long before we can install over a levelled floor?

Product-specific. Every compound has a stated cure and moisture requirement before a covering goes on, and adhesives and floating systems each have their own conditions. We work to the printed data for the products actually used, not to a general waiting period.
