Damage in one spot rarely means a new carpet. Burns, tears, chewed corners and open seams can usually be cut out and patched, provided there is donor carpet somewhere in the house.
Donor carpet taken from a closet where possible
Seams re-cut and re-taped rather than surface glued
Underlay replaced where it has been contaminated

A patch is visible from some angles. Pile direction and the wear difference between old and donor carpet cannot be fully hidden.
What carpet repair covers
Burns, cuts and tears
A cigarette burn, a dropped element or a knife cut is cut out square and replaced with a plug of donor carpet, seamed from underneath.
Pet damage
Chewed corners, dug thresholds and soaked patches. Where urine has reached the pad, the underlay comes out along with the carpet.
Open seams
A seam that has let go is re-cut, re-taped and re-seamed properly. Surface adhesive on an open seam never holds for long.
Under the carpet
Underlay and tack strip in a carpet repair
Carpet is the visible third of an assembly. Underneath sit the underlay, which absorbs anything spilled and then holds onto it, and the tack strip, which is what the carpet is actually hooked to around the perimeter. A repair that only deals with the face of the carpet leaves both untouched. Where a spill, a pet or a leak has gone through, we open the area up, replace the affected pad, check the tack strip is still sound and seal the subfloor before the carpet goes back down. That work is priced as its own line, and without it the stain or the smell comes back through the new pad.
Flooring Experts Calgary repairs carpet in Calgary homes rather than replacing whole rooms wherever there is material to patch with, and that single constraint, the donor piece, decides most of the outcome.
The best donor carpet is carpet that has never been walked on. A leftover roll end in the garage or the crawl space is ideal. Failing that, the back of a bedroom closet, the strip under a bed that never moves, or the area behind a door that does not open fully. Those pieces share the dye lot, the age and the pile height of the floor around the repair, and they are the reason a patch can genuinely disappear.
Carpet cut from a traffic lane cannot do the same job. It is flattened, lighter, and the fibre has been abraded at the base. Dropped into a repair it reads as a slightly different carpet, because by then it is one.
Pile direction matters as much as colour. Carpet has a nap, and a plug rotated ninety degrees shifts shade under every light in the room. A patch gets cut square, oriented to match, seamed with heat-activated tape underneath and then worked across the join so the fibres interlock instead of forming a line.
Where nothing is available, the practical move is to rob a low-visibility area, repair the damage the family actually looks at, and put the closest match we can source into the closet instead. That is a trade rather than a fix: the room you look at every day matches, and the closet does not.
Repairing berber and loop pile carpet
Loop constructions fail differently from cut pile, so they get repaired differently.
In a cut pile, a damaged tuft is one tuft. In a loop pile, every loop is part of a continuous run of yarn, so a single snagged loop caught by a claw, a vacuum beater bar or a chair caster can run like a ladder in a stocking, sometimes across a metre or more.
The repair is to stop the run first, secure the loose end of the yarn back into the backing with adhesive, and then either re-tuft the affected loops or, where the run is long, cut the section out and patch it. Trimming a snagged loop off flush and hoping is the common instinct, and it usually lets the run keep going.
Berber patches are also harder to hide than cut pile patches, because the loop rows are visible and have to line up across the join.
When carpet repair is not worth doing
Carpet repair stops being sensible in three situations.
The first is contamination that has gone past the carpet. Where pet urine has soaked into the underlay, the pad and often the tack strip and a section of subfloor have to come out and be sealed. Cleaning the face over a saturated pad brings the smell back within days.
The second is delamination. Once the secondary backing separates from the primary, the carpet has no structure left to hold a seam and a patch will not stay put in it.
The third is uneven wear, and here Calgary has a say. When road surfaces drop below -5°C the City treats them with pickle, a mix of roughly 3% salt and 97% fine gravel, and that gravel comes indoors on boots for months. It works down into the pile and cuts fibre at the base, which is why entries and hallway lanes in this city wear out well ahead of the rooms they connect. In a lane that far gone, a fresh piece of the original carpet looks newer than everything around it and simply advertises the repair.
Carpet repair questions in Calgary
Will the patch be invisible?
From standing height in normal light, a good patch in cut pile is usually hard to find. From low down, in raking light from a window, or looking along the pile rather than across it, most patches can be picked out. Pile direction and the wear difference between the donor piece and the carpet around it are what give a patch away.
How long does a carpet repair take?
A single patch with donor material on hand is a short visit. Several patches, a re-seam, or opening the floor to replace contaminated underlay and treat the subfloor takes considerably longer and sometimes needs the area left alone to dry. We will tell you which of those you are looking at before booking.
Can you repair carpet on stairs?
Yes, though stairs are their own problem. A worn nosing takes the most abuse in the house, and the repair usually means lifting the carpet on that tread, trimming back to sound material and re-securing it, or replacing the tread covering entirely. Waterfall and cap-and-band installations behave differently and need different amounts of donor carpet.
My carpet still smells after professional cleaning. Can repair help?
Very often the smell is not in the carpet at all. Urine passes through the backing into the underlay and, if it sat long enough, into the subfloor. Cleaning the face leaves both of those in place. Cutting out the affected area, replacing the pad and sealing the subfloor underneath is what actually removes the source.
Is repair worth doing on a carpet that is already old?
It depends on what the rest of the carpet looks like. Repairing one burn in an otherwise sound five-year-old carpet is obviously worthwhile. Patching a carpet that is already flattened in every lane means the fresh piece looks newer than everything around it, and at that point the money is better spent on replacement.
