Bamboo Flooring Calgary Installation

Bamboo behaves like a wood floor in a dry Calgary winter, whatever the botany says. Construction type, acclimation and indoor humidity decide how the finished floor holds together.

What separates one bamboo flooring product from another

Construction type

Horizontal, vertical and strand woven are made differently and perform differently. Strand woven is compressed and resin bonded, and it is a considerably harder surface than the layered constructions. The category word bamboo tells you almost nothing on its own.

Carbonised colour costs hardness

The darker caramel tones are produced by heat treating the material, and that process softens it relative to the natural colour of the same product. If you are choosing a dark bamboo for a busy room, that trade should be a known one.

Moisture response

Bamboo is a grass, but it takes on and gives up moisture much like wood. In a Calgary heating season that means seasonal movement, and in a wet room it means the same trouble a wood floor would have.

Our Process

Our bamboo flooring installation sequence in Calgary

1

Read the site, not just the room

Measure the space, take substrate moisture readings and record indoor temperature and relative humidity as they actually are, before material arrives.

2

Acclimate to the product sheet

Store the material in the room it is going into, for the period and the conditions the manufacturer specifies. Not a generic 72 hours, whatever the internet says.

3

Prepare and set out

Correct flatness, confirm the approved method for the substrate, then establish direction, starting line, stagger and where the floor breaks.

4

Install, expand, detail

Fasten or bond as specified, hold the perimeter expansion, then complete transitions, vents, jambs and stair edges.

Bamboo flooring in a Calgary heating season

Flooring Experts Calgary installs bamboo flooring in homes across Calgary, Alberta, and it meets the same local complication every wood floor in this city does. Calgary sits in the chinook belt, warm dry downslope wind can move the outdoor temperature more than 20 degrees inside a few hours, and the furnace runs against dry air for months. Heated indoor relative humidity routinely drops under 30% in winter, below Health Canada's winter guidance of roughly 30 to 35% and well under the 35 to 55% band the National Wood Flooring Association associates with dimensional stability.

Bamboo is botanically a grass, but it still takes on and gives up moisture, so a bamboo floor in a dry Calgary house will move seasonally. Wider boards make that movement more visible, exactly as they do with hardwood.

None of that rules bamboo out. It means the decision about humidification belongs in the conversation before the product is ordered. A house with a working whole-home humidifier is a different environment for this floor than a house without one.

Types of bamboo flooring: strand woven, horizontal and vertical

The three constructions on the market are genuinely different products. Horizontal bamboo shows the classic knuckle pattern, vertical bamboo shows narrow strips on edge, and strand woven bamboo is shredded fibre compressed with resin under high pressure into something considerably denser and harder than either.

Colour matters too, and not only visually. The darker caramel bamboo everyone likes is produced by heat treating the material, and that treatment softens it compared with the natural colour of the same product. Choosing a dark strand woven board is a reasonable decision. Choosing a dark layered board for a hallway with a dog and winter grit coming through the front door is a decision that will show.

Refinishing potential splits the same way. Solid strand woven with sufficient thickness above the tongue may accept a sand and refinish. Thin engineered bamboo usually cannot, and is limited to a screen and recoat if it is a candidate for anything at all. If you expect to refresh this floor in fifteen years, confirm that on the data sheet before purchase rather than after.

Bamboo flooring installation over Calgary subfloors

Acclimation is where bamboo installations most often go wrong, and the reason is generic advice. The right period is whatever the manufacturer specifies, in the conditions they specify, in the room the floor is going into. Storage location, room temperature and relative humidity during that period are all stated on the product sheet.

Substrate flatness is measured and corrected first. The installation method is matched to what the product approves over that substrate. Perimeter expansion is held and covered by trim rather than eliminated. Height is planned so the finished floor meets stairs, jambs, vents and neighbouring surfaces without an improvised transition.

Basement installations get their own check. Calgary basement slabs sit on expansive clay, which moves those slabs more than it moves footings, so flatness, cracking and slab moisture are all measured before a bamboo product is committed to below grade.

Bamboo flooring questions in Calgary

Will bamboo gap over a Calgary winter?

It can. Heated indoor relative humidity here routinely falls under 30% during the heating season, below Health Canada's winter guidance of roughly 30 to 35% and well under the 35 to 55% band the National Wood Flooring Association associates with dimensional stability in wood floors. Bamboo responds to that dryness much as wood does. Adding humidity in winter is the practical fix, and wider boards show any movement more clearly than narrow ones.

Is bamboo harder than oak?

Strand woven bamboo is typically much harder than the layered constructions and is often harder than common domestic hardwoods, while horizontal and vertical bamboo generally are not. Carbonised, darker versions of the same product are softer than the natural colour. Hardness claims should come from the specific product's data sheet rather than from the word bamboo.

Can bamboo go in a basement or over concrete?

Only if the specific product is approved for it and the slab passes. Calgary basement slabs sit on expansive clay, and clay movement affects those slabs far more than it affects footings, so heaved and cracked slabs are common. Flatness, moisture and slab condition get checked before we agree the product can go down there.

How long does bamboo need to acclimate?

As long as the manufacturer says, in the conditions the manufacturer specifies, in the room it will live in. Generic acclimation advice is one of the more common causes of failures, because a period that works in a humid climate is not the same period that works in a Calgary February.

Can a bamboo floor be refinished?

Some can and some cannot. Solid strand woven bamboo with enough material above the tongue may take a sand and refinish. Thin engineered bamboo with a wear layer usually cannot, and may only be screened and recoated. The product sheet answers it. Ask before you buy if refinishing later matters to you.

What should I budget for bamboo installation in Calgary?

For early planning, use the hardwood installation range of $6 to $15 per square foot in Canadian dollars. That is a planning range to set expectations only, never a quote. Removal of the old floor, subfloor levelling and the product itself all move the real figure.
